Alissa O'Keefe from Thrive Health

Introducing Thrive Health

My name is Alissa and I am an experienced holistic Lactation Consultant, Orofacial Myologist, Teacher and Nutritionist working with families worldwide.

I am a world-leading practitioner in holistic tongue tie rehab, gut health, mother-baby care, feeding therapy, sleep science and functional medicine through the lifespan.

Unlike many experts in my industry, my unique approach blends expertise from several different fields to offer you and your family the best possible solutions for your health and wellbeing needs.

I founded Thrive Health to support my clients, who were not feeling listened to, not understanding the root cause of interconnected issues or trying to prevent old issues from returning to cause problems in the future.

How Thrive Sessions Work

Simply contact me for an initial consultation to see if we are a good fit. I offer face-to-face in-home visits in or at our serene clinic in Port Macquarie (travel fees may apply). I have been pioneering telehealth consults worldwide since before the pandemic, in order to meet your feeding, health, and wellbeing goals, wherever you are in the world.

Step One

I’ll create a detailed written plan for you or you and your child. This includes all the relevant information you’ll need, including fact sheets, referrals and liaison with your other practitioners if required. Also included is free phone, text, or email follow-up for a week as a part of your plan.

Step Two

We follow the plan and continue your sessions with me for as long as is required as you update me on changes and progress. We will plan any follow-up sessions as required.

Step Three

Whatever your needs, I can build a custom care plan for you that really works. Contact me to discover how I can support you with an integrated collaborative approach to your health and wellbeing.

  • I founded Thrive after experiencing complex challenges in my own & extended family’s health and lactation journeys. As the eldest of six, my childhood gave me the unwavering dedication to helping parents face the very real hurdles that parenthood can present. In my own transition to motherhood, I was astounded by the lack of education in the support I sought, both in public health and very expensive private clinicians. I felt so deeply failed by these clinicians.

I am driven by my strong sense of justice, integrity and commitment to ethical inclusion for all. I put people over profits (sometimes too much!) and add value everywhere I can, as I believe everyone deserves. I hold myself to the highest standards in quality results for YOU.

When our psychological health, our sense of safety and sleep is maximised, anything is possible! Together we change the world. When we heal the mother, we heal the baby and the community.

Before having kids, I assumed suboptimal health was ‘normal’. Then, once I became pregnant, I suffered a range of challenges. Despite living in a so-called ‘first world health care system’ I couldn't find help to get ‘well’. Next, my children’s health and wellbeing suffered. We felt gaslighted at every turn by the system that was supposed to help us. This seemed to be happening to so many friends around me, including highly educated friends, privileged people with access to resources, and my Australian Breastfeeding Association group that I had volunteered in since pre-baby.

  • Today, I have my finger on the pulse. I am currently a mother of young children, still involved with the current lived experiences of real families. I am still volunteering and my own friends are still having babies. This adds to my desire to seek out and utilise the latest possible information to help my clients, to shape the world, to defend vulnerable people and uphold the human rights of babies, children, women, and families.

I am a passionate ally; LGBTIQ+ and neurodiversity safe (ADHD & autistic, AuDHD, PDA, etc) and trauma-informed.

I am a proud research nerd and total data geek! You will not easily find a practitioner who has read more primary source data research than me (at least 1-5 full-text peer-reviewed journal publications, every single day!). I have invested many tens of thousands of dollars in university, professional and personal learning, and do so regularly.

My passion for lifelong learning and also my family’s suffering has driven my studies. Now I can best serve you, as you deserve.

Complementing my work as an experienced Lactation Consultant, I am also a trained Nutritionist and Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist, primary school teacher and allied health professional. My additional studies in behavioural neuroscience, biomedical science and teaching encompass childhood development and psychology, combining my broad skillset to offer a unique perspective in supporting parents with holistic evidence-based information.

I am an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) Volunteer Counsellor (Cert IV Breastfeeding Education [Counselling]). I am also a member of the Lactation Consultant Association of Australia and New Zealand (LCANZ) and the International Lactation Consultants Association (ILCA).

  • I offer in-depth Lactation Consultant training based in Lactation Medicine.

My diverse personal and professional experience both locally and overseas gives me a broad worldview in establishing optimal foundations for lifelong health and wellbeing. I have over a decade of experience working with young families and presenting workshops for parenting in a variety of settings.

From prenatal planning, weaning, and everything in between, from position and latch to mastitis, hormones, illness, tongue ties and full oral assessments. I can assist with the entire infant feeding journey, helping parents to navigate difficulties encountered with intolerances, bottle feeding, formula changes, starting solids, nutrition, gut symptoms, reflux, and maternal health.
